CSU linebacker Deonate Gary earns SIAC Player of the Week honors

2219WILBERFORCE, Ohio – Central State linebacker Deonate Gary has been named the SIAC Defensive Player of the Week following an impressive performance against Stillman College last Saturday.

Gary, a 6-foot-1 junior from Lakeland, Florida, recorded two picks, 5 solo tackles and a forced fumble during Saturday's 24-7 road win at SC. Gary's first pick came on Stillman's first drive of the game when he stepped in front of a pass and returned it 30 yards for the game's first score. Gary struck again on the first SC drive of the second half, intercepting another pass and taking it 51 yards to set up a CSU touchdown 3 plays later.

In addition to earning the honor from the SIAC, Gary was also tabbed as HeroSports.com Division II Defensive Stud of the Week for the second consecutive time.

Gary, who transferred from Eastern Arizona in 2013, reflected on what the awards meant to him.

"After sitting out for two full seasons, it has felt great to be able to play alongside my teammates," Gary said. "These awards are a reflection of all the hard work our team continues to put in each and every week. I am just one of many talented players at Central State. For me, it means a lot to help deliver recognition for our team and the entire university."

Gary's 45 solo tackles and 31 assists leads the team and ranks among the top three in the SIAC. He also has a team best 18 tackles for losses heading into next week's game against Tuskegee University.
