CSU seniors finish career with 44-25 victory over Lane College

Box Score 1656Wilberforce, OH - Playing in the last game of the 2014 season, the Central State seniors ended their collegiate careers on a high note with a 44-25 win over Lane College on Saturday.

After the pregame ceremony honoring the 12 departing seniors, the Marauders got off to a slow start, surrendering a 59 yard pass from Terrance Ayers to Johnny Ivey. The Dragons would later score on a 1 yard rush by Ayers to claim on early 7-0 lead. Central State would immediately respond with a 5 play, 67 yard drive capped off by a 15 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Michael Wilson to Christopher Murray.

The Marauders took the lead on Lane's next drive when junior Gervell Morgan intercepted Ayers and returned the ball 70 yards for the touchdown. After a failed extra point, CSU led 13-7. With 1:02 remaining in the first quarter, Lane capitalized on good field position after a botched CSU put left the Dragons on the Marauder 25 yard line. Failing the move the ball, Lane settled for a 36 yard field goal from Carlas Moore to narrow the gap to 13-10.

Wilson would connect to Murray again, this time for a 76 yard touchdown to put the Marauders up 10 with 12:45 remaining in the half. CSU would score again with 2:42 remaining in the 2nd quarter on a 20 yard touchdown rush from Moses Vines to balloon the lead to 27-10.

The Marauder continued their onslaught through the air in the 3rd quarter with Wilson leading the Marauders on a 8 play, 54 yard touchdown drive which finished with 12 yard touchdown drive to Zach Thomas as the Marauder lead rose to 34-10. Kicker John Adams got into the scoring mix with a 20 yard field goal to make it 37-10 with 4:34 left in the 3rd. CSU's only mistake of the quarter came with 9 seconds remaining when two defenders took each other out while defending a deep pass. The ball landed in the hands of Jamion Dunning for 35 yards and a score. After a Carlas Moore missed extra point, the score remained 37-16 going into the 4th quarter.

Moore would redeem himself with a 43 yard field goal at the 10:37 mark of the 4th. The Dragons found the endzone one more time with a 57 yard run by Darius Mitchell but the Marauders quickly reclaimed their 19 point lead when Wilson scored his last touchdown in a Marauder uniform, taking it in from 40 yards out. The Marauder defense halted the Dragons one last time to claim the 44-25 lead and close out the season with a 4-1 record at home.

With the loss, Lane College ends their season an a 6 game losing streak, falling to 1-8 on the year with a 1-6 record record in the SIAC. Central State recorded its best record since the 2007 season (5-5). Under first year head coach Cedric Pearl, the Marauders finish at 4-6 overall with a 3-4 mark in the SIAC.

Wilson finished the game with 237 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air. The senior from Landover, MD, also picked up a game high 106 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He finished the season leading the Marauder offense in passing, rushing yards (627) and rushing touchdowns (8). Chistopher Murray led all receivers with 137 yards and 2 touchdowns. On the defensive end, senior Joseph Blount finished his stellar career with 12 tackles, 1 sack and 2 pass break ups. Craig Williams Jr., a senior linebacker from Illinois, recorded 7 tackles and a sack. Sophomore Artrell McMillan finished with 1 sack on the afternoon, bringing his season sack total up to 11.

In addition to the departure of Wilson, Blount and Williams Jr., CSU bids farewell to senior RG Keenan Woods, LG Jordan Brown, RT Cameron Bradley, DB Remmington Johnson, TE Roy Reid, RB Kyle Jackson, WR LJ Chambers, Quetin Colwart and DB Dontae Reynolds.
