Central State University’s women’s basketball team upset the Kentucky State Thorobreds for the second time this season by a score of 54-42. The Marauders get their 9th win of the season(9-15) while the Thorobreds get handed their 7th loss(15-7) of the season.
Brooklyn Morrow led the Marauders in scoring with 15 total points. This is her sixth game in a row that she has led the team in scoring. She also leads the team in scoring overall for the season with 317 points. Morrow recorded 9 rebounds and a steal in Saturday’s contest. Chloe Obasogie recorded a game high 13 rebound for the Marauders and contributed 5 total points. Laura Longmire and Deshundra Gober came off the bench with strong performances, both scoring 7 points and combined for 19 rebounds.
The first score of the game came at the 16:30 mark when Brooklyn Morrow hit a jumper inside the paint. Moments later Morrow hit a three-pointer thanks to a steal by Ashley McGee. 60 seconds later, the Thorobreds got on the scoreboard and went on a tear, scoring 9 unanswered points. The remainder of the first half was very competitive as CSU tied the game three times and the lead changed hands three times. The Marauders were able to grab the lead seconds before the end of the half with a good three-pointer by Chynele Stewart. The Marauders led 24-21 going into the locker room.
After Jessica Vaughn hit a three-pointer for the Thorobreds, at the 17-minute mark, the Marauder lead was reduced to one point. From there the Marauders scored 8 unanswered points and increased their lead to 9. KSU answered right back with a run of 6 unanswered points and cut the lead down to 3. That is as close as the Thorobreds would get for the rest of the way. The Marauders had a 4-point lead with 6 minutes left to play. CSU went on a six-point run that increased the Marauder lead by 10 with 3:30 left to play. The Thorobreds tried to catch up with a few desperation three-pointers but none of them were converted. The Marauders held on and completed a sweep of KSU, upsetting them for the second time this season.
The Marauders took advantage of any second chance as they scored 21 second chance points to KSU’s 2. CSU won the battle in the paint scoring 18 opposed to the Thorobred’s 12. The Marauders had a sizeable advantage off the glass rebounding 55 to KSU’s 43. KSU committed 28 personal fouls that sent the Marauders to the line for 35 shots. The Marauders converted 25 out of the 35 (65.7%).
The ladies take on West Virginia Institute of Technology on Monday at the Beacom-Lewis Gym, where they will be looking for their 10th win of the season. The Golden Bears have a record of 12-16.
